Lumpsum Investing: Letting Compounding Do the Work

A lumpsum investment is a single, one-time amount you invest and leave to grow. It might come from a bonus, an inheritance, the sale of an asset or savings you've built up. Because the full amount is invested from day one, it has the maximum time to compound. The free Lump Sum Calculator on this page gives you the answer in seconds.

Lump sum investment formula

Future value = P × (1 + r)t

Here P is the amount you invest, r is the yearly return as a decimal (12% = 0.12) and t is the number of years. Growth is applied to the original amount and to all the gains earned so far, which is why the curve gets steeper over time.

Worked example: 1,00,000 invested for 10 years at 12% grows to 1,00,000 × (1.12)10 = 3,10,585, a gain of 2,10,585.

How much will 10 lakh become in 10 years?

Using the lump sum formula, 10,00,000 invested at 12% a year grows to about 31,05,848 in 10 years. At 10% for 20 years it becomes about 67,27,500, and 5,00,000 at 12% for 15 years becomes about 27,36,783. Change the amount, return and years in the calculator to see your own figure.

How much will a lump sum grow in 10 years?

1,00,000 invested atValue after 10 years
8% a year2,15,892
10% a year2,59,374
12% a year3,10,585
15% a year4,04,556

And at 12% over different periods: 5 years ≈ 1,76,234, 10 years ≈ 3,10,585, 15 years ≈ 5,47,357 and 20 years ≈ 9,64,629. Time makes the biggest difference.

The rule of 72

A handy shortcut for compounding is the rule of 72: divide 72 by your yearly return to estimate how many years it takes to double your money. At 8%, that's roughly 9 years; at 12%, about 6. The calculator shows the exact figure in the "Money doubles in about" line.

Lumpsum or SIP?

If you already have the money, investing it at once gives it more time in the market. The risk is that you invest just before a fall. Some investors split the difference by moving a lump sum into the market gradually over several months. Neither approach is right for everyone; it depends on your comfort with short-term ups and downs.

How much monthly income can a lump sum investment give?

A simple rule: if you withdraw only the returns, your capital stays intact. Monthly income ≈ Value × yearly return ÷ 12. For example, 10,00,000 earning 8% a year can pay about 6,667 a month without touching the original amount. The calculator above shows this figure for your final value.

If you'd rather receive a regular income than let the whole amount grow, you can withdraw a fixed sum every month while the rest stays invested. This is called a Systematic Withdrawal Plan. Use our SWP calculator to see how much monthly income your lump sum investment can give and how long it will last.

Before investing a large amount

  • Keep an emergency fund separate from the investment.
  • Match the type of investment to how long you can leave the money untouched.
  • Consider fees and taxes, which reduce the return you actually keep.
  • Remember that market returns vary, so use realistic, conservative assumptions.
